What to Do When Your Car Battery Dies

Step one: read the symptoms

Turn the key and listen. A rapid clicking with dim dashboard lights points strongly at a flat battery. One solid clunk with bright lights points more at the starter. Nothing at all, with no dashboard illumination, suggests a completely dead battery or a disconnected terminal. Complete silence with normal lights is unusual and worth investigating before assuming.

Step two: check the obvious things

Look at the battery terminals. A clamp that has worked loose, or heavy corrosion, will stop a perfectly good battery from starting the car. If a clamp moves when you push it by hand, that may be your entire problem.

Step three: jump starting safely

• Both vehicles switched off, in neutral or park, handbrakes on
• Red clamp to the positive terminal of the flat battery, then to the positive of the donor
• Black clamp to the donor's negative terminal, then to a bare metal earth point on the flat car — not its negative post
• Start the donor car, let it run a couple of minutes, then start the flat car
• Remove the clamps in exact reverse order, keeping them from touching each other

If you are unsure at any point, stop. A mistake here can damage vehicle electronics that cost far more than a battery.

Step four: do not just drive off and forget it

A jump start tells you nothing about why the battery went flat. If it was a light left on, a short charging drive may be all you need. If the battery is at the end of its life, or the alternator is not charging, you will be stranded again — often the next morning. Have the battery and the charging system tested the same day.
