How to Choose the Right UPS Battery

Match the unit first

Your UPS has a rated battery voltage and a charging current designed for a certain capacity range. Fitting a battery outside that range causes problems in both directions: too small and it is discharged too hard, too large and it never charges fully. Start from the unit's specification, not from a desired backup time.

• Tubular: better with long, deep discharges, typically longer life, needs water top-ups

Why UPS batteries die early

Three causes account for most premature failures we see in Noida. The first is heat: a UPS shut inside a cupboard or under a desk with no airflow runs warm all day, and heat is the fastest way to age a lead-acid battery. The second is a charger holding too high a float voltage, which slowly dries the battery out. The third is a unit permanently running near full load, which means the battery is never given an easy day.

Signs it needs replacing

Backup time drops sharply. The unit beeps and shuts down almost immediately on a cut. The battery case looks swollen — which is not a wait-and-see situation, it should come out of service. Or the battery simply will not hold a charge after a full charging cycle.

When a UPS is the wrong answer

If you are trying to hold up a substantial load for a long time, a UPS with a bigger battery is often not the right tool.
