A flat plate battery uses flat pasted plates, much like a car battery. A tubular battery holds its active material inside woven tubes around a central spine. That construction resists the shedding of active material that happens when a battery is discharged deeply and repeatedly, which is precisely what a home inverter battery is asked to do.

Tubular batteries need their electrolyte level checked every two to three months and topped up with distilled water only. It takes five minutes. If nobody in the house is going to do it, and you would rather not schedule a visit for it, a sealed option is a more realistic choice than a tubular battery that will be neglected.
Cost over time, not on the day
Compare the two on price per year of expected service rather than on the invoice. A tubular battery that costs more and lasts substantially longer in deep-cycling duty is generally the cheaper option in the end — but only if the duty is actually deep cycling.
