How to Maintain Your Car Battery

Keep the connections clean and tight

Corrosion on the terminals creates electrical resistance, which makes a healthy battery behave like a dying one and makes the alternator's job harder. Check the posts for the white or bluish crust that builds up. Clean it off, make sure the clamps are tight enough not to move by hand, and apply a light coat of terminal grease to slow it recurring.

Give the battery a chance to charge

Starting the engine takes a big draw; replacing it takes sustained running. If your driving is all short hops, the battery slowly loses ground. An occasional longer run — genuinely thirty minutes or more of driving, not idling in the parking lot — makes a measurable difference. Idling charges poorly because engine speed is low.

If the car stands for long periods

• Start it and drive it properly at least every couple of weeks where possible
• Remember that alarms, immobilisers and dash cams draw current continuously
• Before a long absence, arrange a top-up charge rather than leaving it to drain
• Do not disconnect the battery casually on modern cars — stored settings can be lost

Watch the summer, not the winter

Heat is what degrades a battery; cold is what exposes the degradation. Parking in shade where possible genuinely helps in Noida. So does having the battery load-tested at the end of summer rather than waiting for the first cold morning to find out.

Don't let it sit deeply discharged
