How to Exchange an Old Car Battery

Every lead-acid battery has scrap value. It belongs to you, and it should come off the price before you pay.

What exchange actually is

When you buy a new battery, the seller takes your old one and deducts its scrap value from the price. The value comes from the lead inside, which is recycled. It is not a discount the shop is generously offering you — it is your property being bought from you.

What the value depends on

  • The weight of the battery — larger batteries contain more lead and are worth more
  • The type: automotive, tubular inverter and e-rickshaw batteries differ
  • The prevailing scrap rate, which moves with metal prices
  • Whether the case is intact; a badly damaged battery may be worth less

Making sure you actually get it

Ask for the exchange amount as a separate figure before agreeing to anything, rather than accepting a single bundled price. A seller who will not tell you what your old battery is worth is telling you something useful. At our counters the old battery is weighed in front of you and the deduction is stated openly, so you can see the arithmetic.

Handling an old battery safely

Old batteries are heavy and contain acid. Keep them upright, do not tip them, and do not carry one by its terminals. If a case is cracked or leaking, tell whoever is handling it. If you are bringing a battery to a shop, put it in the boot upright on something that can be cleaned, not on a seat.

Why the recycling channel matters

Lead-acid batteries are recyclable almost entirely, and they are also genuinely hazardous if broken up informally. Batteries taken in exchange should go to authorised recyclers, which is both the legal route and the reason your old battery has a value at all. Ours do.

Can I exchange without buying?

Yes. If you have an old battery lying in a store room, bring it in and we will weigh it and tell you what it is worth. You do not have to buy anything to get rid of it responsibly.

Doorstep exchange

If we are delivering a battery to your address in Noida, the old one goes back with us in the same visit and its value is already reflected in the price you were quoted. See doorstep battery delivery and old battery exchange.
